以 BL21 勝任細胞進行蛋白表現 Stratagene 的ArcticExpress、BL21-CodonPlus、BL21-Gold 和 BL21 competent cell line 是專門設計用於增加蛋白摺疊和水溶性、減少codon bias 或著選殖大片段及ligated insert 時適用的勝任細胞，利用 BL21 勝任細胞配合 T7 promoter based 蛋白表現系統的特性，可以大幅增加蛋白產量。
效能強化版 最常見的蛋白表現用勝任細胞BL21-CodonPlus 是將 BL21 經過基因重組後改良而成，和一般 E. coli 相比擁有更多真核細胞中的 tRNA 表現基因，對於原核細胞在表現某些真核細胞蛋白時，能減少因為 codon bias 導致蛋白難以表現的問題。
增加蛋白正常摺疊及水溶性ArcticExpress 勝任細胞專門設計用於解決蛋白水溶性不佳的蛋白表現問題，從安捷倫高表現量的 BL21-Gold 勝任細胞改良而來，擁有額外表現 chaperonin 及低溫表現蛋白的能力，可以有效克服蛋白時容易發生降解沉澱 inclusion body 的問題。
